Just as I suspected last week, this American classic didn't take long to read. Not knowing what Of Mice and Men was actually about, I went in without much expectation. I quickly realized it was about the relationship of the two main characters Lennie and George. It wasn't a typical relationship, especially for the early 1900s. I felt for Lennie, and for George, but each in a different way. Their relationship was complex and almost that of a father and son but we never really know exactly their relation, just that George knew Lennie's Aunt Clara.
SPOILER ALERT: I nearly cried at the end of the book. The last 10 or so pages I was just hoping I was thinking would happen wouldn't happen. But it did. Although, it didn't quite happen as I expected. It was an even sadder end than I'd imagined. I'm glad I read this book as an adult and not as a teenager. I don't think I would have appreciated it as much. As I continue to read the great classics that I was not assigned to read in high school, those authors, and characters, have big shoes to fill following Of Mice and Men.

5. That's the number of hours it takes to get from my condo to my parents' house in the Chicago suburbs. Usually Lucas and I plow down I-80 only stopping for construction workers. One the way back though, we really had no reason to rush. We were both starving half way through the trip which is conveniently as we cross the Mississippi River. We stopped to get some gas at our usual place, but then ducked across the road into Bierstube. I thought it was a Firestone auto shop based on the font and color of its sign. However, Bierstube turned out to be a vintage/German restaurant with a perfect view of the Mississippi River. Lucas ordered the Jagerschnitzel and I was a bit boring going with the French dip. Lucas really enjoyed his while mine was pretty disappointing. There were several delicious-looking appetizers on the menu. We've already decided next time instead of getting an entree, we will each order an app or too.
Once you're married, going to weddings will never be the same as when you were single. I was excited to help celebrate a longtime friend's wedding this weekend. As soon as we arrived I found myself analyzing every detail from the programs and decorations to song selection and jingling of bells as the couple exited the church. It was a great ceremony, an amazing reception with unforgettable food and a live band, and Sarah looked killer in her full, fun, modern wedding gown. She (and I'm sure Robbie helped a bit) put together a lovely day with a mix of traditional and modern elements. The church, simple black bridesmaids dresses, and her processing in with her veil draped in front of her face were tried and true to weddings years ago. But Sarah's textured dress, their written vows, and the guys' gray suits and funky orange ties are spot on for a 2013 wedding. As a single gal, I wouldn't have taken notice to half of those things. As a married woman, I have a great appreciation for the planning behind every girl's dream day.
Congrats to the newlyweds! |
