Just as I suspected last week, this American classic didn't take long to read. Not knowing what Of Mice and Men was actually about, I went in without much expectation. I quickly realized it was about the relationship of the two main characters Lennie and George. It wasn't a typical relationship, especially for the early 1900s. I felt for Lennie, and for George, but each in a different way. Their relationship was complex and almost that of a father and son but we never really know exactly their relation, just that George knew Lennie's Aunt Clara.
SPOILER ALERT: I nearly cried at the end of the book. The last 10 or so pages I was just hoping I was thinking would happen wouldn't happen. But it did. Although, it didn't quite happen as I expected. It was an even sadder end than I'd imagined.
I'm glad I read this book as an adult and not as a teenager. I don't think I would have appreciated it as much. As I continue to read the great classics that I was not assigned to read in high school, those authors, and characters, have big shoes to fill following Of Mice and Men.
