| Our neighbor stopped by the other night asking us to sign a petition. She explained West Des Moines Community Schools plans to change the boundaries for elementary schools, in turn affecting junior high boundaries. We live less than a half mile from Fairmeadows Elementary School, where our home is currently assigned to attend. That's well within walking distance. However, one of the two proposals would require our future children to take the bus to Clive Elementary, which is 2.5 miles away. That makes no sense to me. To voice my opinion, I attended one of the three public informational meetings. About 100 people were there on a chilly Tuesday night. The superintendent explained to everyone the process of re-drawing the boundaries, the boundary committee, the research, the reasons and the goals. Then we broke into small groups of about 10 people to ask our questions and express our opinions. A school staff member took notes to give to the boundary committee. I hope they listen... |
