"You have to lose yourself in another person, and she has to lose yourself in you. It's a two way thing."
This whole movie is just so relevant to our culture today. I'm assuming Gordon-Levitt - who wrote, directed and starred in the film - set out to make a statement about our over-sexualized society. In the film, the only example of intimacy Jon had ever seen was from porn. Clearly, that's not where to learn how to have a healthy sexual relationship. It's fantasy. It's acting. It gives men (and women) unreal assumptions and expectations. In a day when anyone can watch pornography whenever and wherever they want, we have to know that it has real consequences on our relationships.
Reading this, you're probably feeling like you're getting a lecture. If not, good, because writing this I feel like I'm giving a lecture. However, if you watch Don Jon you will take away the same point of what I'm saying but not at all feel like you're being preached to. I think that's why I'm so impressed with the movie. It's entertaining and real. It's relatable and emotional. It's thought-provoking and moving. It talks about a huge issue in society that isn't talked about much.
I'm also super impressed that Gordon-Levitt wrote, directed and starred in the film. That's a lot of hats to wear and to wear them well. But he does it. Hats off to you, Joe.
