He mentioned earlier last week he'd really like to bike up to the High Trestle Trail Bridge between Woodward and Madrid. I'd been there once for work; it's super cool. I told him that would be fun and that it was a great idea. He brought up the bridge a few more times last week to make sure we had time to go. He's never stressed doing something so strongly, so I got a little suspicious. We had joked around about how he can and can't propose before, but he always reassured me he hadn't even bought a ring yet. Still, I thought this may be it.
It was about 8:00 p.m. when we made it to the bridge. The sun was just slowly starting to set and the lights on the bridge hadn't come on yet. There are three lookout/observation points along the bridge. Lucas suggested we stop at once. As we are watching the sun set and I'm taking pictures, he asks me to look over here. As I turn and lower the camera from my eyes, he's on one knee opening a small box. "Baby, will you marry me?"
"Hmmm.... yes." Even though I suspected he might propose, I didn't practice a response. I mean, it's not like you have to practice saying yes. At the moment, it seemed a good idea to throw in the hesitation for suspense. However, there was no doubt in either of our minds that I would accept. How could I say no to the most amazing man I've ever meant? I clearly couldn't.
So there we are on a bridge. I'm in my Mizzou shorts, a tank top, and running shoes. It's not the outfit I'd wanted to be wearing when adding a diamond to my finger, but hey, I'm flexible. Besides, once you realize you'll be spending the rest of your life with the man of your dreams, you forget what you're wearing.
Lucas and I have come a long way since our first date at Jimmy John's (see post from February 2, 2012). Some people may say our engagement was quick but put it in perspective. His parents were engaged a week after meeting and married within 3 months. They will celebrate their 30th anniversary this fall. My sister and brother-in-law were engaged one month after meeting and married 16 months later. They just had their 3 year anniversary. I'd say we're right on track.
