I just happened to be hanging out with my niece who watches Frozen just about every day during nap time. I decided it was time I watch it myself to see first hand what the rage is all about. After all 102 minutes came and went, I was disappointed. Here's why:
1) The opening sequence is a whirlwind back story. From the ice guys singing to Elsa injuring Anna to the trolls curing her to their parents dying. It feels very rushed, and I felt very exhausted after the first 10 minutes.
2) The music is lackluster. Let It Go is the only memorable song in the movie. The duets in the other songs are cool, but I can't bust that out at any ole time like I can Hakuna Matata, A Whole New World or Part of your World. I'm still scratching my head why Let It Go swept the globe.
3) The bad guy isn't bad enough. I grew up with Ursula, Jafar, Scar and evil step-mothers as the villains. Hans very well could be the weakest villain in all of Disney history. Poor guy. Not to mention, what do we learn from this? Don't get engaged to a guy you just met. What do you learn from Ariel? Don't barter with an octopus sea witch. Personally, I find the latter lesson more relevant.
4) I heard it isn't a typical "Prince Charming' story, but it kind of is. Anna falls head over heels for Hans right away. Then after accepting his marriage proposal, starts to flirt it up with Kristoff. Who helps her find Elsa? Who wants to cure her frozen heart? Who lives happily ever after? Sure, the movie doesn't end with them getting married, but it still shows a woman meeting, depending on and falling in love with a man (aka Prince Charming).
I will give the flick credit for the twist to have Anna saving Elsa as the act of true love. Overall though, I'm not sold. #sorrynotsorry
