Lucas and I headed back to Waterfront for sushi for our second time. A month ago we went (see post 9.20) and I wasn't overly impressed. Well this time, I was thoroughly impressed! We ordered the Philadelphia, Miami, Godzilla, and Rock n Roll.

It was our first time eating at Buzzard Billy's in downtown Des Moines. Man, that was a lot of food! I'm talking gut-busting, artery-clogging, button-popping, I can't believe I just ate that, food. We ordered alligator tails and spinach artichoke dip for the apps. In retrospect, that was a terrible idea. There was just way too much fried food. The menu claims it has the best beer cheese soup ever. Not true. It was good soup, but I've had better. The hush puppies were a little over-cooked but extremely tasty. If you're on a health kick, steer clear of this place: cajun, creole, southern, and fried. Well, there was a salad or two. Save the Dates: check! Ordering these postcards was the next thing on my wedding to do list. I'm excited to get them in about two weeks; I'm not excited about addressing them all. Maybe we'll print off some labels rather than hand write them.
I used the website weddingpaperdivas.com. I looked at a couple others, but this one had the best designs and was more user-friendly when designing the card. It was a little more expensive than the other sites, but with Lucas' Costco membership, we saved 20%. I love a good deal! This weekend was the first time I hosted my cousin Ashlee in town and took her out on the town. We walked along the river downtown and stopped by the Chinese structure that I've never been to before. Later that night, we hit up Hessen Haus for Ashlee's first boot. She thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, we got a second boot because she loved it so much. We'll have to do it again soon!
If you would have asked me if I wanted to get some froyo before today, I would have thought you were referencing Lord of the Rings or something. My eyes have been opened! It was my first time getting frozen yogurt aka froyo at Orange Leaf on Ingersoll. It tastes like ice cream but is waaaay healthier for you. Orange Leaf on Ingersoll is a funky little place with bright orange and white furniture. Here's how it works: You grab a cup or waffle cone and go to any flavor dispenser on the wall. You get as much as you want and then add whatever toppings you want. You pay based on how much your cup weighs. It's about 40 cents an ounce. I got 4.3 ounces, which was a great size. My lunch date, eh hem, got about 9 ounces and devoured it too. It's totally customizable which I love! Must try!
We got a DJ! Lucas and I reached out to 5 or 6 DJ's in the metro for our wedding reception. We met with one of the guys, Erick Sims, today. We liked him so much, we signed the contract and paid him on the spot. People have said great things about him which is helpful. Lucas also felt very comfortable with him. After a wedding, people remember the food and if it was a fun time. We're hoping Erick
My new MacBook Pro is pretty sweet. It's blazing fast and almost half as thick as my old PowerBook. But when things get skinnier, other things get left out - like a CD drive. This computer has a SATA drive and not a disk drive like every other computer. So after buying a very expensive laptop, I had to buy a super drive in addition. Today was my first day using it. It just plugs into the USB drive and is super easy to use. It makes the laptop not as convenient though, say on an airplane, where space is limited and you would want to watch a movie.
It was like Christmas morning! Lucas and I had been anxiously awaiting our engagement photos. And they came today! They look awesome! We really only need a couple good ones but have at least two dozen. Check em out! http://www.pictage.com/1328519
Lucas likes sci-fi. I mean, really likes sci-fi. I could never watch it without a shred of curiosity.
It was a lazy Sunday so we plowed through several episodes of Terra Nova. It debuted on Fox last fall and was canceled after just the first season. So in 2149, Earth is dying. A rip in time is discovered. A select few eople are chosen to go 85 million years into the past to try to create a new civilization. It's a different plot than what we usually see on primetime. For not being a sci-fi nerd, I liked it. But again, had I never seen it, I wouldn't worry about it. Another item on the wedding to list: bridesmaids dresses. I'm a pretty laid back bride (no Bridezilla yet), so I'm open to different bridesmaids dresses. I want my girls to like their dress, feel good in it, and look good in it. I'm letting them pick from one of the top three styles in long or short.
Bridesmaids dress shopping was a ton of fun but super tiring as well! My maid of honor and two bridesmaids were able to come to Des Moines to try some on at the Bridal Boutique in the East Village where I bought my gown. They each modeled about 10 dresses to narrow down our search to the above choices which are all from the Allure line. I've also decided on eggplant for the color. It's a beautiful color that looks complimentary on all skin colors. It's also more re-wearable than lavender, which is what I was originally thinking. Thanks Mom, Jen, Tessa, Anita, Michael, and Carolee for coming! Behind every great man is a great woman. Well, behind every great wedding is a great DJ. As we've slowly been making decisions for our wedding, DJ has yet to get crossed off. Tonight we tackled the matter by emailing 5 local DJ's found through google and facebook.
Picking a DJ is no light choice. If the DJ sucks, the whole mood of the reception will suck. Then people won't have fun and will remember your wedding as the one that sucked. We are very hopeful one of these 5 will rock our reception. |
