I'd been recommended by a friend to read this book. Boy, she was right. The story seems simple - a boy willing to do anything for the love of his father. The story unfolds involving friendship, the class system in Afghanistan, war, religion, politics, honor, bravery, lies, regret, deceit, betrayal and a little boy who's haunted by a secret he can't tell anyone and his search to be good again.
You may not be able to relate to growing up in Afghanistan, but I bet you can relate to one of the points mentioned above. I bet you have regrets. I bet you've felt betrayed or maybe you were the betrayer. I bet you've felt love for your parents, spouse, child, friends.
I rarely cry in "real life" but I'm a baby when it comes to movies. In the last few chapters of The Kite Runner, I found myself wiping away tears so I could make out the words on the pages. Hosseini created a story that has entertained me, moved me and made me think.
